They inhabit the substrate and decaying wood, where they break down leaf litter, rotting plant material, and organic waste, contributing to nutrient recycling and improved soil health.

In bioactive enclosures, panda king isopods support microbial activity and help maintain long-term substrate stability. Due to their larger size and slower reproductive rate compared to dwarf species, they are primarily functional as cleanup organisms rather than a feeder species, making them well suited for display-focused or mixed-species bioactive systems.
